I got an Emerson (I think model 8??) when I was in 10thgrade, as an improvement from my student flute. It was solid silver with ahandcarved embouchure hole. This flute was great for me as a growing musician. The solid silver made a huge improvement on my sound. My Emerson lasted methrough college (not a music major). It was only until last year that I neededto get a better flute because I had reached a plateau in my playing.

It totallydepends on what model you are looking at and what your level of playing is. Mybest advice is to try out several flutes. I regret that I was not able to dothat when I got my Emerson. So who knows, maybe I would have gotten somethingbetter? Another problem with some flute companies and I wontjust pick on Emerson. But many of these companies go through different ownershipover the years they have produced instruments. Or those in charge have had adifferent quality goal in mind.

So when you say how good is an Emerson orGemeinhardt? What model and what year was it made and sometimes which plant wasit made in. I did kind of assume the person was asking about student flute as itis hard to imagine people looking at Emerson in the advanced flute, given thecurrent state of the industry. You can pick up a nice used student Emerson forabout 50 bucks as they have no resale value and are probably as good asGemeinhardt, Armstrong or the others. My main point was that the poster should try out severalinstruments, not to say how great I thought my Emerson was. If you're lookingat one individual player, his/her sound will possibly be slightly different ondifferent instruments.
If someone is currently playing a really crappy studentflute, has become more advanced with flute-playing, and they pick up one of thebetter Emerson models, there is a strong likelihood that they will sound better. It all depends what your current level is and what model you pick. The Emerson or DeFord flutes are decent right now, maybea shade above Gemeinhardt. Depends whose opinion you want to go by, people seemto develope an extreme opinion about instruments that aren't really a whole lotdifferent in quality. Most student flutes play pretty well, some are easier tohave in tune acroos the scale some break down less, but on the whole they areall decent and none really good. Emerson, Gemeinhardt and some other studentflute makers, make step up and even so called pro flutes, personally I havenever seen or heard any of them that I would own if I were to spend that kind ofmoney but there might be some.
Of the big time student companies, only Yamahareally has an upper level line that anyone uses. To each his or her own.
